Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious infection that can lead to tooth loss, bone damage, and even systemic health problems. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing these devastating consequences. Unfortunately, some dentists fail to properly diagnose and treat this condition, leading to unnecessary suffering for their patients. If you suspect your dentist has been negligent in your periodontal care, a dental lawyer can help you understand your rights and pursue a claim for compensation.

The Devastating Impact of Untreated Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is more than just bad breath or bleeding gums. Left untreated, it can cause significant damage to your oral health, including tooth loss, gum recession, and bone loss. In severe cases, it can even contribute to serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. The pain, discomfort, and self-consciousness associated with advanced gum disease can drastically impact your quality of life.

Understanding Dental Malpractice and Periodontal Disease

Dentists have a legal and ethical obligation to provide their patients with a certain standard of care. This includes performing thorough examinations, recognizing the signs of periodontal disease, creating appropriate treatment plans, and referring patients to specialists when necessary. Failure to meet this standard of care can constitute dental malpractice. Examples of negligence in periodontal cases include:

  • Failure to perform adequate probing and charting of gum pockets.
  • Failure to take or interpret necessary X-rays.
  • Failure to diagnose and document signs of periodontal disease.
  • Failure to provide timely and appropriate treatment.
  • Failure to refer to a periodontist when needed.

How a Dental Lawyer Can Make a Difference

If you believe your dentist has failed to properly diagnose or treat your periodontal disease, a dental lawyer can help you pursue a claim for compensation. A skilled Solicitor will:

  • Thoroughly investigate your case by gathering dental records and consulting with dental experts.
  • Build a strong case on your behalf, demonstrating the dentist’s negligence and the resulting harm.
  • Negotiate with insurance companies to reach a fair settlement.
  • Represent you in court if necessary, fighting for the compensation you deserve.

  1. I have severe gum disease which has been progressing to the point where my dentist has now said at least two of my my teeth need to be removed. I have asked them repeatedly if there is anything else I could do to make them better or prevent them getting worse and they have said to just keep flossing, there is nothing else I can do, and that they can see I have been doing well with the flossing to reduce the inflammation.

I have been attending the dentist approximately every three month for several years. reading up on my current predicament I believe they should have referred me to a periodontist which may have prevented the bone loss that has resulted in them referring me to have my teeth removed by the maxillofacial unit due to risk of osteonecrosis from previous radiotherapy for cancer treatment.
